Detailed Guide: Tasmania 2024/25 Skilled Migration Program

Here’s a detailed breakdown of the pathways available under the Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190) and the Skilled Work Regional Visa (subclass 491).

Onshore Nomination Pathways (For Applicants Already in Tasmania)

The onshore pathways are applicable to both the 190 and 491 visas:

1. Tasmanian Skilled Employment Pathways
  • Subclass 190: Employment in ANZSCO Skill Levels 1-3 in any skilled occupation listed by the Department of Home Affairs. You need a minimum of 6 months of employment for Tasmania's Onshore Skilled Occupation List (TOSOL) occupations or 15 months for non-TOSOL occupations.

  • Subclass 491: Employment can be in ANZSCO Skill Levels 1-3 or 4-5 for industries facing severe labor shortages. Employment duration is 3 months for TOSOL occupations and 6 months for non-TOSOL skilled employment, or 12 months for lower-skilled roles.

2. Tasmanian Skilled Graduate Pathways
  • Subclass 190: Completion of a minimum of 2 years of full-time study in Tasmania, achieving at least one overall qualification at AQF 5 (Diploma) level or higher.

  • Subclass 491: Completion of a minimum of 1 year of full-time study in Tasmania, with qualifications ranging from AQF 5 (Diploma) or higher to Certificate III related to an ANZSCO Major Group 3 or 4 occupation.

3. Tasmanian Skilled Established Resident Pathways
  • Subclass 190: You must have lived in Tasmania for 3 years or more (with more than 50% of your overall Australian residency in Tasmania) and have been employed in ANZSCO Skill Level 1-3 for 12 out of the last 24 months or ANZSCO Level 4-5 roles for 18 out of the last 36 months.

  • Subclass 491: Residency in Tasmania for 2 years and employment in ANZSCO Skill Level 1-3 for 6 out of the last 12 months or ANZSCO Level 4-5 roles for 12 out of the last 18 months.

Offshore Nomination Pathways (For Applicants Outside Australia)

The offshore pathways are designed to attract skilled workers to Tasmania:

1. Overseas Applicant (Job Offer) Pathway (491)
  • Visa Type: Subclass 491

  • Key Criteria: Applicants need a formal job offer from a well-established Tasmanian business in their nominated occupation. Pay and conditions must be equivalent to the local market.

2. Overseas Applicant (Health Sector Job Offer) Pathway (190)
  • Visa Type: Subclass 190

  • Key Criteria: Applicants must have a formal job offer in an eligible health sector occupation from a well-established Tasmanian business.

3. Overseas Applicant (OSOP) – Invitation Only Pathway (491) - "We are currently not accepting Registrations of Interest for this particular pathway. If you are currently living outside Australia and want to be nominated by Tasmania, you will need a job offer from a Tasmanian employer and use the Overseas Job Offer pathway, or if you have a job offer for a health or allied health position."
  • Visa Type: Subclass 491

  • Key Criteria: This pathway is based on invitations. Applicants are selected through the SkillSelect database based on profiles developed in consultation with industry needs. ROIs (Registrations of Interest) remain closed for this pathway until selection rounds occur.

Key Features of Tasmania's Program

  • No Occupation Caps: All occupations on the Department of Home Affairs' subclass 491 and 190 Skilled Occupation List are eligible, and Tasmania does not place caps on specific occupations, graduate courses, or study sectors.

  • No Minimum Point Score: Tasmania only requires a minimum of 65 points to register interest, without prioritizing applicants with higher scores.
